The Opportunity

Our Actuarial Consulting practice comprises two areas: Life Insurance and Non-Life (Property/Casualty) products and services. This role is to lead the Life Actuarial practice in Bermuda; this exciting role is a result of the continued growth in the Life insurance/reinsurance industry across the region and will involve working closely with other EY teams, particularly in the UK, Europe and US to deliver cross-border engagements to our clients. Here, you’ll be right at the heart of that mission, leading client engagement teams in the Life area, working directly with clients, mentoring and developing team members and building your personal brand as a leader in your field.


Your Key Responsibilities

You’re likely to split your time on operational aspects of client business and business development initiatives. That means developing an in-depth understanding of our clients’ unique needs and goals, before leading a team in developing and delivering meaningful actuarial consulting services to our clients. You’ll be responsible for delivering a project which means you will need to communicate effective new strategies and the plan to bring these strategies to life with your team.

  • Lead large scale client engagements. Consistently deliver quality client services. Drive high-quality work products within expected timeframes and on budget. Monitor progress, manage risk and ensure key stakeholders are kept informed about progress and expected outcomes. Manage expectations of client service delivery. Stay abreast of current business and industry trends relevant to the client's business.
  • Effectively lead and motivate teams with diverse skills and backgrounds. Provide constructive on-the-job feedback/coaching to team members. Foster an innovative and inclusive team-oriented work environment. Play an active role in counselling and mentoring junior consultants within the organization.
  • Generate new business opportunities. Understand EY and its service lines and actively assess/present ways to serve clients. Develop and maintain long-term client relationships and networks. Develop relationships with team members across all EY practices to serve client needs.
  • Demonstrate deep actuarial technical capabilities and professional knowledge. Demonstrate ability to quickly assimilate new knowledge. Possess in depth business acumen. Remain current on new regulations concerning the Insurance industry.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of complex actuarial concepts, discuss complex issues with the engagement team and client management, keep informed of professional standards and firm policies (e.g., Actuarial Standards of Practice), and effectively apply this knowledge to client situations.
  • Maintain a reputation as an industry expert by writing articles, taking a leadership role within industry groups and speaking at industry events.

 

To qualify for the role you must have 

  • A Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, and/or other related major
  • A minimum of 10 years of recent relevant experience in an actuarial position with at least 3 years of increased management responsibility; prior experience within a professional services and/or public accounting firm is required
  • Fellowship in the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (FIA) or Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (SOA) or other internationally recognized professional actuarial association
  • Regulatory experience, either through working for the regulator or liaising with the regulator for company approvals/applications.
  • Technical and practical understanding of Solvency II and the European regulatory regime; an understanding of the Bermuda equivalent regulatory regime would be highly valued but is not required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, presentation, client service and business writing and consulting skills

 

Ideally you’ll also have

  • Prior consulting experience with strong business development, sales and account management skills
  • Ability to deliver proposals and contribute to strategic discussions at the Board and senior management level
  • Willingness and ability to travel to meet client needs
  • Strong managerial experience including leading teams across different projects
