Service Line: Assurance; Climate Change and Sustainability (CCaSS)
Functional Area: Sustainability Advisory, Reporting and Assurance Services
 
Role Description:
The role includes working across the following 3 areas as relevant to the client services portfolio within this sub-service line. Strong qualifications and prior experience is required for at least 2 of these three areas, one of which must be Assurance Services
 
Sustainability Advisory
  • Lead pursuits and proposal development for advising clients on development/evolution of sustainability/ sustainable development corporate strategy, including integration of sustainability strategy with overall business strategy
  • Lead service delivery for development/integration of sustainability strategy
  • Lead team professional development initiatives/on-the-job training in sustainability advisory consultancy services
 
Sustainability Reporting
  • Lead pursuits/proposal development for advising clients on development of their corporate reporting strategy including sustainability reporting/sustainable development reporting
  • Lead service delivery for assisting clients with development/evolution of their non-financial/sustainability reporting according to investor needs
  • Lead team professional development and training for sustainability reporting consultancy services
 
Assurance Services for sustainability reporting and/or compliance reporting
  • Lead pursuits/proposal development for providing assurance services to corporates for non-financial reporting and reporting on compliance, as relevant to different industry sectors
  • Lead service delivery for provision of sustainability reporting and compliance reporting assurance services
  • Lead team professional development and training in sustainability reporting and compliance assurance services
 
Key attributes of the person who will be appointed to this role are:
  • At least 5 years prior experience in at least 2 of the above 3 areas (one of which must be sustainability reporting assurance/compliance assurance) – preferably obtained in a large auditing firm environment
  • Strong experience of the ethical and quality and risk management environment of a professional auditing and accounting firms proven ability to align to expected professional conduct and ethical/professional behavioural standards
  • Well-developed capability to lead, high-quality performance of sustainability reporting and compliance reporting assurance engagements, with excellent knowledge and technical mastery of implementation of standard assurance concepts and assurance methodology to these assurance engagements in accordance with International Assurance Engagement Standards issued by the IAASB (i.e. the ISAEs)
  • Proven experience in client management and engagement management in line with expected standards for client service quality and service performance quality
  • Strong experience of leadership of client relationships with focus on exceptional client service; evidence of well-developed industry sector-focused capability (preferably in the financial services sector and/or mining sector)
  • Proven team leadership capability and ability to align with overall business strategy
  • Strongly developed teaming ability and ability to work within diverse teams; proven ability in mentoring skills and assisting development of other team members
  • Well-developed personal resilience and ability to work in pressured service delivery conditions
  • Strong commitment to continuous learning and ongoing professional development, including self-learning capability
  • Diligent attitude to work and achievement of performance targets associated with the senior manager role within EY
  • Well-groomed personal appearance in line with expected standards for corporate life; excellent writing skills, articulate, capable public speaker and/or experienced in public presentations/client presentations
  • Excellent data management skills/digital analysis skills/computing ability
  • Must be willing to undertake periodic travel, both within and outside of South Africa (e.g. to other locations within Africa)

CCaSS Executive Director, Senior Managers, Managers and Consultants
CCaSS teams located in other regions – particularly EMEIA/and in EY offices in Africa and elsewhere
CCaSS Global team leadership
 
Qualifications & Experience:
  • Chartered Accountant qualified with at least 5 years’ experience in a large auditing firm environment (South Africa CA qualification is preferable)
  • Excellent understanding and experience of sustainability strategy and reporting and assurance methodology and tools (including use of assurance analytics); performance of assurance engagements; it will be a distinct advantage for candidates to have experience in design and deployment of assurance analytics
  • Excellent understanding of the risk and quality management environment as applicable to undertaking engagements to perform assurance services
  • Strong project management abilities and organizational skills (essential); strong administrative skills (essential)
  • Excellent data analysis/digital skills; computing ability (knowledge of SAP systems is an advantage)
  • Current South African driving licence and own transport
 
Essential skills and behavioural attributes:
  • Strong experience of the professional services team leadership experience and ethos
  • Strong capability to manage effective and efficient teams for service delivery targets and objectives in line with firm policy and standards for client services
  • Mastery of assurance standards and assurance methodologies applied by professional auditing firms for assurance services related to sustainability reporting/non-financial reporting/compliance reporting
  • Ability to work with limited supervision with appreciation of the critical importance of observing engagement quality protocols at all times  
  • Proven ability to perform work/role requirements either at the EY office environment or from remote locations (e.g. client work environments/at client sites) on a self-managed basis
  • Proven project management capability and engagement team management capability – esp.  excellent ability to multi-task and prioritise tasks and in a team management environment
  • Well-developed interpersonal communication skills
