  Your Key Responsibilities



  1. Project Delivery

  • Land and deliver higher value investment projects that are complex and challenging, requiring sector specific knowledge, but will deliver the greatest value to the UK economy.

  • Act as the critical friend to the FDI client; where appropriate, challenging the client’s market entry /  expansion strategy / implementation plan , helping shape the operational plan to ensure a greater chance of success.

  • Review the aims and objectives for a FDI client visit, working in partnership with the client to plan and then execute the visit, ensuring it is successful.

  • Provision of critical intelligence and connections required by the FDI client. Delivered through compelling client proposals (quality controlled by the Head of the Sector), more informally through emails / client meetings and referrals to key intermediaries.

  • Manage client visits where required and referrals to other service providers that will support the client in landing in the UK. 

  • Work with local partners by managing virtual project teams to ensure the client gets the best advice possible and that that information is aligned to ‘UK First’ principles. 



  1. Account Management

  • Develop and account manage a caseload of foreign owned, UK-based companies, and develop in-depth influencing relationships with key company staff.

  • Visit and contact companies regularly in line with the account management programme principles

  • Develop an awareness of your companies’ strategies, and their position in market and supply chain, in order to develop account plans, source active projects and deliver added value to the companies.

  • Identify and develop potential FDI projects from your companies and land these through providing required information

  • Obtain market intelligence on a number of Government critical issues from company engagements and delivered through the Monthly Intelligence Management Report



  1. Knowledge acquisition to support investment

  • Create and maintain a sector focused network at a national and local level, in order to meet the needs for the FDI client.

  • Support the Head of the Sector and DIT HQ Sector Team, in producing insightful sector specific strategies to inform plans and develop sector propositions to secure FDI wins. 

  • Work in partnership with the Knowledge Lab Team, to ensure sector specific UK First client materials are current and appropriate for the sector.

  • Maintain up-to-date and complete understanding of the global sector and the UK’s competitive position and offer in their sector of focus. Share this information with  colleagues where necessary / appropriate.


Key targets include:

  • Secure agreed FDI projects from existing investors, based on specified DIT investment thresholds

  • A positive and productive working relationship between the IST, DIT HQ and Posts.

To qualify for the role you must have

  • Degree or equivalent level qualification highly desirable and evidence of past experience in delivery of FDI case work. Used to working to targets and a business plan.

  • Have experience in account management or a related field.

  • Experience and / or good knowledge in at least one of the sub sectors where they will to be deployed and credibility with clients/industry and DIT Overseas Posts. Significant experience in one or more of DIT’s sectors:

    • Advanced Manufacturing (including Aerospace, Automotive, Performance Engineering, Materials and Chemicals)

    • ITEC (including ICT, software, electronics, security and creative & new media industries),

    • Healthcare and Life Sciences (including Pharmaceuticals and Medical Biotechnology, Healthcare, Food & Drink)

    • Infrastructure (including construction, energy, environment and water and transport & logistics),

    • Services (including education, finance, professional and business services and retail).
